Winbai Ngoma

Wimbai Ngoma was born in Nyanga, Zimbabwe in 1975. He grew up as the firstborn with eight sisters and brothers in Nyanga and completed there secondary school at a mission school. His artistic career became apparent at a young age, because he always received excellent grades in the school subject “Arts and Crafts”, so it was logical that he after finishing school immediately picked up hammer and chisel to let his talent run free.

In 1998 Wimbai went to Harare to learn sculpting in the Chapungu Sculpture Park under the guidance of the popular sculptor Passmore Mashaya. In Chapungu Wimbai got in touch with many well-known artists. He eagerly absorbed everything he could learn and acquired the qualities that makes him a very good sculptor today. After years of intensive training he looked for a place in a suburb of Harare, where he could live and work and he began to make his own sculptures.

Wimbai is an award-winning artist in his country. He participated in local and international exhibitions. His sculptures are in exhibitions and private collections in the Germany, USA, Canada, Austria, Portugal, Holland, Switzerland, Great Britain, China and South Korea.

Since 2008 he has been regularly invited by a German gallery to represent “Shona Art” and to give workshops at various locations in Germany. There he introduces interested people with all his specialist knowledge in stone-sculpting.

In 2019 Wimbai was for 4 months as "Artist in Residence" at the renowned Canadian gallery ZimArt, where he had a large exhibition and gave sculpting workshops.
